Black Stone Cherry’s (BSC) fourth long-un sees them scaling Magic Mountain, but not necessarily the top of the pile. Stepping the right way towards their debut sound, you’ll want some of whatever is going on with Mary Jane, and the sexy ‘Blow My Mind’ will have you scouting around for the nearest Mr or Miss capable of popping your top. ‘Peace Pipe’ has the right mix of hard and soft, whilst ‘Never Surrender’ is surprisingly rough, but tracks like ‘Runaway’ and ‘Bad Luck & Hard Love’ feel like lacklustre past offerings re-fried and re-packaged. Where these songs will truly be proven is on the stage, and the biggest gripe about Magic Mountain is that as ever it doesn’t capture that BSC live magic, where every riff rocks that bit harder and each ballad has more backbone. Find someone who can put that on record and BSC might have the perfect landscape to nail that flag into.
